Is Love Stronger Than Vengeance?
A Betrayal…
Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.
A Choice….
Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.
A Secret…
But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.

Book Review: A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire By Jennifer L Armentrout

I’ve never seen an author release two books IN THE SAME YEAR THAT ARE UP TO PAR WITH ONE ANOTHER. From Blood and Ash left me hung over, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire left me soulless in the best way possible. A perfectly written sequel that just left me open mouthed and clutching my pearls by the end of the book.

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD

I Want to Read the Spoilers! Show Me! Poppy’s life has taken yet another unexpected twist. With the shocking announcement from Prince Casteel Da’neer, the man she knew as Hawke, of their supposed engagement, Poppy has gone from one gilded cage into another….or so it seems. New truths come to light the more time she spends with Casteel and his people and Poppy must make a decision that can change her life drastically yet again. She knows better than to trust the Dark One…but his secrets seem just as dangerously seductive as he.
Poppy’s character development in this book was by far by favorite thing about this book. She continues to grow stronger and more confident in herself as the story goes on. Continues to move forward despite all she knew was a lie and despite those she loved are now gone. Her curiousity and short temper with Casteel made up for some amazing moments between the two. Not to mention, her budding friendship with Casteel’s best friend, Kieran….the shade between them two was hilarious.
Kieran was an amazing secondary character throughout this book. Supporting both Casteel and Poppy’s character development, allowing Poppy to see a more human side to Casteel and pushing Poppy to open her heart more toward him. His willingness to protect Casteel and Poppy warmed my heart.
Casteel…Hawke….I dont think I’ve gushed about him enough in the last review. A character filled with depth. Seemingly perfect but with dark secrets and trauma hidden underneath. His inappropriateness throughout the story was….*dreamy sigh* And his willingness to take responsibility for all that he has caused?? The weight he carries from all those that have died because of him?? We get to see such vulnerability with Casteel and that makes my heart sing! JLA gaves us the perfect imperfect male lead once again.
Lastly, let me gush about the world building in this book. JLA paints a gorgeous picture of what the world outside the walls looks like. Of how alive it is. The Blood forest, the fog within the mountains. The voyage that we go with the characters in this book is both haunting and beautiful. JLA gives us enough without over-painting the picture and I’m super appreciative of that.
Overall, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire gets a 5/5 stars from me.

Things I didn’t like:

  • look at that….I have no complaints!

Things I did like:

  • The action was well placed
  • Good supporting characters
  • The World Building
  • The Lore

XOXOXO,

Jeimy
