DNF Book Review: Enemies by TIJAN

Title: Enemies

Stone Reeves was my neighbor, and I’ve hated him since sixth grade.
Gorgeous and charismatic, he became the town’s football god, while I became the town’s invisible girl. He went to a Division 1 school for football, while my father was fired by his father.
His team won the National Championship, while my mother died the same day.
He was a first round pick for the NFL …
… while I made the worst decision of my life.
Now I’m in Texas trying to pick up the pieces of my life. But, Stone is here. Stone is everywhere.
It doesn’t matter that disaster has struck my life again. It doesn’t matter that he’s the one trying to console me. It doesn’t matter that he’s the nation’s newest football obsession.
Because for me, he always has been and always will be my enemy.

I made it about a quarter of the way before I finally put it down.

I struggle with Tijan’s books. I really do. This is the 4th book I’ve picked up written by them and I couldn’t finish it. I had high hopes for this one as it’s an enemy to lovers romance novel…..

We all know how much I love enemies to lovers novels…..

The story follows a young woman named Dusty whose life is pretty much in the dumps. Misfortune follows Dusty everywhere she goes and in an attempt to start over and follow her dreams, she moves to Texas for college. But poor Dusty can’t catch a break.

She moves to the one state Reeves, her enemy, dominates. The room that she rented in a “quiet, boring” house is full of party girls who hate her on sight. The person who rented her the room took the deposit money and now she has to pay the initial rent again. Her step-mother is insisting that she contact Reeves. Reeves is now texting her telling her to tell her step-mother to back off.

The setup is a little fast and I dont mind that…

But it doesn’t stop there. The train is going at full speed ahead with no intention of slowing down. Things turn into a melodramatic soap opera my Mami used to watch when I was growing up. And it’s not long before the eye rolls are frequent enough that I worried my eyes might get stuck.

Unfortunately, I had to put the book down as it began to be obvious that it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Things I didn’t like:

  • Unnecessary back to back tragedies
  • Inconsistent character personalities
  • Unrealistic situations (more so than normal)
  • Reeves finding out right away why she hates him

Things I did like:

  • The backstory, it has potential

I try to be as honest as I can and highlight things I did enjoy from the books I don’t finish/ didnt enjoy. At the end of the day, it could be a book for someone else even if I didnt like it 🙂

      Thank you for reading <3
