Today’s post is all about Books with Hispanic main characters.
Diversity is something that is lacking in the YA + NA + Fantasy book genres. And when I say lacking, I mean HEAVILY lacking. It’s not something that is easily available when you grab a book from a shelve in a book store or when you peruse online. If you have or have read books with non-white main characters, it’s usually because A: someone recommended it to you or B: you actively searched for it.
Now, I’m not saying that there aren’t authors out there writing about non-white main characters. There are. Which is great on one hand but….Let’s leave that discussion for a different post.
I won’t lie, as a Hispanic woman, there are times that I want to read about someone who’s like me, going off in these grand adventures and living in these exotic worlds. I want to be able to relate even more to the character I’m reading about.
Although I haven’t found my Hispanic main character in a fantasy novel, I was lucky to come across a 3 in NA. The joy I felt in my heart when I read these cannot be compared to much. The characters resonated more with me. I understood their family dynamics wayyyy more because I lived through it! haha.
- Wait for it
- The Wall of Winnipeg and Me
Mariana Zapata is not only the QUEEN of slow burn, but she is also one of the few authors I’ve come across that is writing Hispanic main characters in the NA genre.
Searching for more authors like her proved impossible. I couldn’t find a single N/A author writing about a Hispanic main character. I tried looking for Y/A and had more luck there:
