Book Review: Slumber by Samantha Young
” Molded by a tragic childhood, nineteen-year-old Rogan finds it extremely difficult to trust people. Now Haydyn, her best friend and the one person she does trust, is dying and only Rogan can save her.
Setting off on a journey to retrieve the plant that will cure Haydyn and subsequently the ills that will befall them all if she dies, Rogan is stuck in close quarters with a protector she distrusts above all others.
The son of the man who destroyed Rogan’s family.
At a constant battle of wills with the handsome Captain of the Guard, Rogan just knows this adventure together will be fraught with tension. She never imagined, however, that the quest would be so dangerous… not least of all when she finds herself falling for a man she could have sworn was her no.1 enemy… ”
This week’s book review is a YA book titled Slumber by Samantha Young.
I started 2019 with a contemporary book in my hand and needless to say Slumber was a good way to get back into my Fantasy mood.
Slumber takes place in a magical world called Phaedra, a world created a millennia ago by the Fae who left the Human world behind. Phaedra was ruled by the Dyzvati, powerful beings who wield the power of empaths, spreading the feeling of peace and removing negative emotions from their world. Along with the Dyzvati exist:
The Glava who have domain over the elements, telekenises, and foretelling and intuition.
The Azyl who are like magical compasses; their power allows them to find anything anyone asks for.
As time passed, the magic began to die within Phaedra and with it the number of magical beings.
Rogan is one of the few Azyl thought to be left, her power allowing her to be the handmaiden to her best friend, the Dyzvati princess Haydyn. When Haydyn contracts a deadly sickness called the Somna Virus, Rogan must use her ability to find a plant thought to be extinct in order to save her.
And she won’t be going alone. Much to Rogan’s dismay, the Captain of the Guard and her arch-nemesis, Wolfe Stovia, is to go with her!
Slumber by Samantha Young was a delightful book. Rogan was a strong female lead without leaving the turmoil of emotions a nineteen-year-old usually feels behind. Her determination to save her best friend, and put her best friend before all else was admirable. Her journey provided her with growth and opened her eyes to so much she had closed herself to. Keeping to its YA elements, the book gave you just enough slow burn teases without losing pace. I started the book with a smile on my face and end it just the same.
Needless to say, Slumber is definitely a book I would recommend all to read.
If you lived in Phaedra, which type of mystic would you be?
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! What book will you be starting the week with? Let me know below <3
