“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”
Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.
Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.
The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.
But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.
I picked up Uprooted by Naomi Novik last week. The book was the last one at the Barnes and Noble near my house, sitting near the front atop a stack of political books. The top right cover was slightly bent and the way the pages were cut, were jagged as if the industrial printer hit a snag mid-job.
I’ll be honest, I saw it and scrunched my nose at the less than perfect appearance. After browsing for about an hour, picking up most of the books on my list that were available, I kept thinking back to Uprooted for some reason. Hoping that no one had picked it up yet, I went back to where I’d last seen it and added it to my pile.
Let me start by saying that this book did not disappoint!
Agnieszka comes from a small village that is bordered by a terrible and corrupted Woods, an entity that threatens their village and the world. The village is protected by the Wizard known as The Dragon, a powerful and immortal man who lives in a tower not far from there. But there is a price that they must pay for his protection; every ten years, The Dragon comes down to the village and takes a young woman who will serve him for ten years.
Agnieszka believes this a fate just as bad as being taken by the Wood; and when her best friend Kasia is believed to be the next one taken, fear unlike any other takes over her.
However, when the Dragon picks Agnieszka instead; her whole world begins to crash down around her.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED Uprooted. I don’t even know where to start!
Agnieszka, the Dragon’s and Kasia’s character developments were steady; The world building was phenomenal. The Wood was a formidable opponent, a true villain. The creatures were cleverly thought out. I was completely transported into the world Naomi created. I wanted to be there fighting alongside the characters.
Agnieszka and Kasia’s relationship was solid and pure, a true friendship. The Dragon and Agnieszka’s relationship blossomed into something that isn’t completely unrealistic; both characters keeping true to themselves.
Uprooted made its way up to being one of my favorites in just 464 pages.
It can have all the stars in the universe!
If you guys love New Adult Fantasy, a good story, wonderful characters and world building, I heavily recommend Uprooted.
May your weekend be productive and worthwhile!
