Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
If I could describe Stephanie Garber’s writing in one word, it would be Enchanting. From the first page, I was hooked yet again. Caraval took me on a marvelous adventure full of mystique and intrigue, Once Upon A Broken Heart plunged me back into that world.
Once Upon A Broken Heart takes us back to the world of Caraval, just following the events of Finale. Our new heroine is named Evangeline Fox and her loved one is set to marry someone else! Desolate and desperate, Evangeline concocts a way to stop the marriage so she can live her happily ever after with her love; Making a deal with a Fate….and not just any Fate. The Prince of Hearts, Jacks.
How Did I feel?
Once Upon A Broken Heart was an enjoyable read. I loved the Caraval series and wanted to know more about Jacks ever since he first appeared in Legendary. Though we don’t get much information of him in this books, there are things that make you wonder about his origin. I have lots of theories but Garber has sneaked in some doubt throughout the book, so I’m left unsure.
The world-building was beautiful. The way the North is painted as this place where magic hums within its undercurrents had me wishing I could transport myself there! Who wouldn’t want a dragon-fired apple?
Or to walk past the Castle Archway?
Garber gives us the right amount of world-building without overriding the senses. She gives us just enough of a description to where out imagination can easily fill in the rest.
What did I like?
“[…] After I got mauled by the wolf, my scars weren’t sexy scars-“
“He just said sexy scars,” Jacks drawled. “Are you really listening to this?”
Jacks to Evangeline
- Evangeline Fox
- Sister Sub-Theme
- The North
- THE TENSION
“Don’t worry, I’m still not going to kiss you.” His lips brushed over the delicate underside of her wrist. Once. Twice. Three times. It was barely a touch, and yet there was something incredibly intimate about it. It made her think of the other stories that said his kisses might have been fatal, but they were worth dying for.”
What did I not like?
- Not much insight on Apollo
- Evangeline being so naive
Once Upon A Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber was enchanting to read. It’s definitely in my favorites category. It gets a 4/5 stars from me.
